A.C.E. Award Nominations

1. John Oliveira—WINNER!

Congratulations to John Oliveira, CNA Float Pool & Tracy Cox (Security) / Nominated by: Jadie Andrus, RN ED Department Supervisor, our November 2022 ACE Award Winner!

I would like to nominate John Oliveria & Tracy Cox for their exemplary “above and beyond” treatment of an ER patient. The patient was an older woman who was here on a 1:1 psych hold with delusions, dementia, and other significant issues. Not only were these two employees incredibly kind and patient with this woman going out of their way to help her feel safe and even valued.

For example, I observed them both walking in the hallways with this patient (it’s hard to stay in a small, windowless ER room – especially without a TV). They let her talk. They listened to her and validated her. She was never without a smile on her face when she was with them and this was not always her demeanor, clearly it seemed that these smiles and her comfort with, and trust of, these two employees was a genuine experience for her.

When this patient had basically refused to eat (she did not trust that the food was not being poisoned by her “neighbors,” as she believed), John and Tracy took her downstairs to the cafeteria. John bought her lunch with his own money and, because she watched the food being prepared, she ate her first full meal (since arriving to the ER a couple of days prior).

Later that afternoon, I observed John seated in the front lobby with this patient. She wanted to sit in the sun, and they couldn’t go outside because of the cold weather. John sat with her as they shared stories… I am not sure how long he sat with her, but I did witness a beautiful moment where it seemed like they were just old friends catching up on life’s events together.

I know that the 1:1 sitters are assigned for the safety of the patient… but John (and Tracy) made this tough experience a million times better for this patient- way better than it could’ve been. Thank you for your time and consideration of this nomination.

#2) Nominated by: Christina Schuijt, Nurse Manager: I would like to nominate John Oliveira, Float pool CNA for going above and beyond with an elderly patient. He was assigned to be a sitter for her for his shift. His patience and genuine attempts to connect with her to understand how to help her during her time of distress was amazing.  John was able to recognize her needs to go for a walk outside of the unit to decrease her agitation. He bought her lunch with his own money, sat with her in the lobby, and went above and beyond to take the extra time to make her feel safe and valued as an individual.

2. Elizabeth Sarinana—RUNNER-UP!

Congratulations to EVS Nighttime Supervisor /Nominated by: Amy Rippel, EVS Supervisor

I would like to nominate Elizabeth Sarinana for the ACE Award. Elizabeth is our nighttime supervisor in the EVS dept., and she is such a hard-working individual. She always comes to work with a smile on her face regardless of what is going on in her personal life, as she is dealing with her own health issues. She comes in, gets right to work, and helps her co-workers. She also takes it upon herself and goes above and beyond to show appreciation to her co-workers, at work and outside of work, she supplies treats and such for their birthdays, coordinates a ride home if they need and that’s not even part of her job description. She takes it upon herself to throw potlucks or holiday parties for her night crew creating a fun work environment. She will cover areas and shifts if we are shorthanded without even batting an eye. Her work ethic is phenomenal, and she does everything with a smile on her face. For someone who is battling their own health issues, goes above and beyond to take care of her team, Elizabeth deserves so much more than just the ACE Award, so kudos to her.

3. Elizabeth Sarinana—RUNNER-UP!

Rebecca Marchan, Pediatric RN / Nominated by: Ivonne Labra, Pediatric Dept.

Hello, this is Ivonne Labra from the Pediatric Unit. I want to Nominate to the A.C.E. Award to Rebecca Marchan. She is the RN in the pediatric unit, and she is always taking care of the little humans also she is always flexible to cover and help others. She is always working hard it doesn't matter what the situation, she takes the time to provide the care to each patient and always teaching others to grow up. She deserved it.

4. Jason Killian—RUNNER-UP!

RN, ICU Supervisor / Nominated by: Jessie Labra, Admissions Dept. Manager

I want to nominate Jason Killian for an Ace Award -We had a patient that claimed she had discharged from the ICU and was told to come in for an x-ray by team members on the floor but there were no orders. There was no x-ray order with discharge paperwork and the patient was extremely upset. Jason was so kind and so helpful and really wanted to help solve the problem. It is fairly rare to get someone from the floor to be that invested in a problem like this and go the extra mile to work with us and find a solution. Most of the time we do not get a lot of assistance from the floor, and it causes a lot of struggle for us, I really appreciate the support that he gave us and how friendly he was. He called physicians, reviewed orders, took a verbal for the x-ray and the patient was not even from his area in ICU they had come out of IMC. I was blown away because we do not often find nurses that will be that involved that nice, and that supportive. Amazing for the patient experience because we were able to get her needs met and dissolved the situation before it became a complaint and a negative experience.
