June 2022 Nominations

A.C.E. Award Nominations

1. Alana Cota—WINNER!

IFCH CNA/ED

I would like to nominate Alana Cota for the ACE Award. Alana went above and beyond her normal job duties when an ER patient was discharged and waiting (for more than 2 hours) in the ER waiting room for a ride back to her nursing home. This patient was demented and hard to redirect. Alana spent a lot of time with her to help her feel comfortable. She offered blankets and gave her food and drink (although, not the martini that the patient requested multiple times, but she did not go hungry).

Alana continued to intervene and redirect each time the patient wanted to leave the building unattended and go for a walk outside, which would not have been safe. Alana did all of this (and more) while still performing all of her regular work duties. But one of the greatest things she was able to do for this patient was this – When the patient saw a poster on the wall that was talking about heart disease and, when the patient insisted that she have this poster removed from the wall and given to her to read and keep, Alana took the time to research and print off informative pamphlets that this patient could have and take with her. Alana’s kindness and attention not only helped this patient to remain safe, but also allowed her to feel valued and cared for during her lengthy and unexpected post-visit wait.

2. Fred Reyes—RUNNER-UP!

IFCH Manager/Med/Surg

I would like to nominate Fred Reyes for an ACE Award. Fred is always going above and beyond to make sure that our unit is taken care of. I don't feel like Fred gets the appreciation that he deserves. Fred puts his whole heart into caring for his staff and patients. The great things that Fred does for our unit are immeasurable and hard to single out because he just does so much. Fred bought a cake for one of his staff members who received a certification and threw her a party, this is a tiny example of the things Fred does to make our team feel valued. Fred fights for our ratios every day to make sure that our nurses and CNAs are put in a safe situation when they come to work.

Fred gives individuals every chance to succeed when they are hired onto our unit. Recently when a patient's family member was unruly and disrespectful to not only the patient but our staff members, Fred brought flowers into the patient and apologized (in a situation that he shouldn't have even had to) to ensure that our patient had a positive experience. When one of our staff members is hurting Fred genuinely feels for them and loses sleep because he cares so much. Fred kindly reminds each staff member to please approve their timecards in Paycom repeatedly even though he shouldn't have to. Even though there is a lot that Fred must put up with when he comes to work... he shows up with a smile on his face and generosity in his heart.

Fred works to keep morale high and make sure that staff feel appreciated and valued. Even when we opened the hospital and Fred was a charge nurse, he was always sure to be the first one here and the last one to leave. Fred has been known to come in on his day off to help a staff member fill out and upload her application.

3. Marianne Nelson-HONORABLE MENTION!

IFCH RN/ICU

I nominate Marianne Nelson for the Ace award because she always goes above and beyond as an ICU charge nurse. She always makes sure that everyone is having a good day and if not, she offers as much assistance as she can to make the day better. She does phenomenal work as a nurse and gives the highest patient care to every patient even when they can be difficult. She always makes sure that the nurses as well as the CNA’s are taken care of. She even gives the friendliest smile to housekeeping and other staff who come into the ICU. She does this while also going to school for nurse practitioner and being a wonderful mom and wife. She lights up the unit every time she works! We need more nurses like her!

4. Mary Russell-HONORABLE MENTION!

IFCH RN/IMC

Hello! I would like to nominate Mary Russell for the ACE award. She is always smiling and always has a positive attitude, no matter how crazy the day gets. She always goes above and beyond to help the CNAs with bed baths and showers, and never complains about any of her assignments. She makes sure to spend lots of time in the rooms with her patients, making sure their concerns are addressed and that they are as comfortable as possible. I cannot think of any specific story, but she is always going above and beyond to help others and take excellent care of her patients.

5. Shania Jackson-HONORABLE MENTION!

IFCH CNA/ED

I would like to nominate Shania Jackson (CNA, ER) for this month's ACE award.
Shania volunteered to come in at the last minute for a fellow CNA that had a family emergency. Shania responded rapidly to the hospital, ensuring that staffing was adequate so our patients could receive timely and exceptional care. This is not an isolated occurrence for Shania. She is frequently able and willing to come in last minute to assist with shortfalls, during extra-high census periods, and goes above and beyond to help her coworkers with emergency coverage and scheduling conflicts. Shania always goes out of her way to greet patients and coworkers with a smile and treats everyone she comes into contact with like family.
