If you’ve been to the Cornerstone Café recently you’ve probably noticed that our baking
team has been showing off their talents and skills and delighting us all with a variety of
tasty treats. Come see what Melissa, Lis and Merelou has baked up for us… new items
added daily… and for those looking for gluten-free options, that No Sugar Added

Upcoming Changes in Café Pricing

We are approaching the two year anniversary of the COVID-19 invasion on our community and facility.
We have maintained our pre-COVID prices, thinking that the wild price increases and difficult product
availability would return to normal at some point—but two years in, we are still finding it difficult to
locate product, and as you’ve noticed in the grocery stores, prices have not come back down, and in fact,
continue to rise.  Many of the items on our current café menu are being sold at prices that do not even
cover the cost of purchasing the food (that’s right, we’ve actually been paying you to come eat our food),
so unfortunately we will be needing to increase prices. The newer items that have been recently introduced
such as the Burger of the Day  and our breakfast specials are appropriately priced and will not be changing,
but please be aware that during the month of March you will see changes in the prices of some old favorite
items that we’ve been selling at two years’ ago prices.

Radiation Safety Restructure

Hello from the office of Radiation Safety. You may notice when the new classes are assigned in Health Stream that the Radiation Safety courses for Idaho Falls Community Hospital have been restructured for 2022. Previously we reserved this education for the staff of the departments that worked directly with radiation, however, during our last regulatory inspection the question was posed, “Would a general staff member of a non-radiation department be able to recognize a package in a hallway with a radiation sticker on it?”

Because Idaho Falls Community Hospital performs a variety of radiation patient procedures and possesses several categories of radioactive materials that are delivered through couriers, the Radiation Safety Officer put together this safety education program in order to create a basic understanding for the general hospital staff in all departments.

The first course is a general radiation safety course that covers a broad sweep of concepts from a brief description of “What is radiation?” to “Which patient procedures will make the patient radioactive?” The second course is very short and includes a couple of mandatory pieces of information that could not be added to the first, such as “Who is the Idaho Falls Community Hospital Radiation Safety Officer?”

There will be no need to pull out a calculator in order to calculate radioactive decay times or dose delivered, but there will be several topics covered that may be very new to some: the difference between an “external” radiation source and when the patient is the radiation source, the difference between unsealed “liquid” sources and sealed “encapsulated” sources, the importance of time/distance/shielding in reducing your overall radiation exposure, and the hospital’s stipulated goal of keeping staff members exposures “As Low As Reasonably Achievable.”

I hope that you find the courses informative, and above all I hope they help to promote a culture of radiation safety for our staff and our patients.

David Theel, Radiation Safety Officer

A.C.E. Award Nominations

1. Heather Harsha—WINNER!

IFCH ICU RN - floated to ED

Heather volunteered to float to the ER from ICU on a busy day. Upon her arrival she immediately jumped in and started helping by covering overdue lunches and operating as a float nurse. Heather also happily took a full patient assignment as swing shift nurses went off shift, despite her not having access to ER charting.

Additionally, when ER staff was occupied with an assaultive patient Heather monitored the occupied nurses' patients until it was safe. Heather also volunteered to float to the ER the following night as there was another opening. Heather was integral in maintaining the operational capability of the ER and proved herself a valuable team member yet again.

2. Tiffany Mitchell—RUNNER-UP!

IFCH ED RN

I nominate Tiffany Mitchell RN for the ACE Award because she is always going above and beyond for her patients and fellow coworkers. Since starting this new position she has been there every time I have had a question and was able to answer with grace & poise. She never talks negatively about her coworkers or patients and is always bringing the light everywhere she goes.

3. Zachary Wintermyer

IFCH ICU CNA/Unit Secretary

He is always willing to do whatever it takes to keep the ICU floor running smoothly. He goes around and checks on staff as well as patients several times a night to make sure that all is well. He does not wait to be told that he is needed. I just love working with Zach because he is so easy going.

4. Jeremy Parker

IFCH IMC RN

I enjoy working with Jeremy and watching his bedside manner with the patients. He is very caring, attentive, and does his best to stay on top of the patient’s needs. When Jeremy talks to the Doctors about the patients, he has all his ducks in a row and is very fluent about what his patients needs are and the things that he has observed during the shift. When I ask him questions about our patient care, he is patient and seems to love to take that moment to teach me. Thank you, Jeremy!

5. Allison Adamson

IFCH ICU RN

Every shift that I work with Aly I am awed at her energy. Sometimes I think of her as the Hummingbird of our ICU. She has an awesome bedside manner with the patients and their families. Aly is another RN that I love to listen to as she reports to the doctors about the patients.

6. Samantha Grate (Elsmore)

IFCH Med/Surg RN

Sam always has a smile on her face. She truly cares about each patient that is present on her unit. Sam cares about and supports the nurses & CNA's that she works with. It's not always easy being a buffer to the doctors (especially on night shift) but she excels at it. From my perspective, she is very easy to work with and if she tells me there is or is not a patient, that I should be aware of on her unit I believe and trust her judgment.

7. Anita Yanez - SHOUT OUT!

MVH MRI Tech.

Today a patient presented with intractable back pain that required an MRI. The ER was busy and short staffed by 2 nurses. MRI was notified of the orders and told the patient was not ready (and that we would let them know when the patient was ready). Justin was in the ER within 5 minutes of the call and volunteered to complete the screening form as well as assist in dressing the patient out for the MRI so that ER staff could be freed up. Justin also transported the patient to and from MRI. Justin's prompt, voluntary, response and willingness to help showed dedication to providing excellent patient care and inter-unit and hospital cooperation.

8. Hugo Rubio - SHOUT OUT!

MVH Pharmacy Tech

I would like to nominate Hugo Rubio to receive the ACE Award for the month of March. Hugo currently works the night shift with me in the pharmacy department and he will often buy a meal or a snack for not only those of us in the pharmacy, but for other staff around the hospital. He is very thoughtful and quietly provides for people simply because he can, and because he knows that things run better when we take care of each other. He never expects a thing in return.

He also makes a point to get to know people from other departments. Walking around the hospital with Hugo is like walking with a celebrity-so many people know him, and he says hi to nearly everyone. Part of this is because he has worked in so many capacities before coming to us in pharmacy, but it is mostly because Hugo simply loves people.

On top of his acts of kindness, Hugo goes out of his way to make sure things are running as smoothly as possible for our team. Night shift is a 7 days on, 7 days off schedule with 12 hour shifts on each of those seven days. However, Hugo routinely shows up early to make sure we’re caught up and have a smooth night. Besides this, he comes in during the day for most of his weeks off as well to cover open shifts and help with our day crew’s load. If one of our team is sick or can’t be in, it is often Hugo that will be in to help. If you ask him why he is so generous with his time, he will explain that when even the little things don’t get done, it affects our patients. Everything Hugo does is to benefit those we take care of, and this is seen not only in the way he takes care of his team, but also his interactions with our patients.

Most of our work in pharmacy is behind the scenes. From mixing I.V. medications, to stocking medications on the floors so nurses can quickly grab what they need to treat people, we don’t have too much face time with the patients we’re treating. However, as technicians we get a chance to speak with our patients about what they take at home before being admitted to the hospital during a Med History. Hugo goes above and beyond and if a patient needs something that he can grab, like a warm blanket or a glass of water, he will do what he can to make them more comfortable. He will also chat with them and has a great bedside manner. These are just a few of the many examples of why I think he is a great candidate for this award.
