Radiation Safety Restructure
Hello from the office of Radiation Safety. You may notice when the new classes are assigned in Health Stream that the Radiation Safety courses for Idaho Falls Community Hospital have been restructured for 2022. Previously we reserved this education for the staff of the departments that worked directly with radiation, however, during our last regulatory inspection the question was posed, “Would a general staff member of a non-radiation department be able to recognize a package in a hallway with a radiation sticker on it?”
Because Idaho Falls Community Hospital performs a variety of radiation patient procedures and possesses several categories of radioactive materials that are delivered through couriers, the Radiation Safety Officer put together this safety education program in order to create a basic understanding for the general hospital staff in all departments.
The first course is a general radiation safety course that covers a broad sweep of concepts from a brief description of “What is radiation?” to “Which patient procedures will make the patient radioactive?” The second course is very short and includes a couple of mandatory pieces of information that could not be added to the first, such as “Who is the Idaho Falls Community Hospital Radiation Safety Officer?”
There will be no need to pull out a calculator in order to calculate radioactive decay times or dose delivered, but there will be several topics covered that may be very new to some: the difference between an “external” radiation source and when the patient is the radiation source, the difference between unsealed “liquid” sources and sealed “encapsulated” sources, the importance of time/distance/shielding in reducing your overall radiation exposure, and the hospital’s stipulated goal of keeping staff members exposures “As Low As Reasonably Achievable.”
I hope that you find the courses informative, and above all I hope they help to promote a culture of radiation safety for our staff and our patients.

A.C.E. Award Nominations
1. Rose Zundel—WINNER!
IFCH ED Clinical Team Lead/RN (2 Nominations)
I would like to nominate Rose Zundel is always known for going above and beyond for her staff and patients but this week she went the extra mile. There was a patient that was getting admitted to the ICU. He didn't want to be admitted because had his dog with him and was really worried about who would take care of her. Without hesitation, Rose offered to take the dog home with her and care for the dog until the patient was able to be discharged.
I completely second this nomination. Rose consistently goes above and beyond.
I am writing this email to nominate Rose Zundel for the next ACE award. Rose is an outstanding employee and makes a positive impact to our ER team. Rose is a hard worker who always goes beyond the goals set for the department. She’s one of the best charge nurses’ who the team can count on to care for the employees and patient’s needs. Most recent example was yesterday there was a gentleman (semi-truck driver, from out of state) who was placed in the ICU. The patient had a dog that needed cared for. With no friends or family in town to help him, Rose took it upon herself to take the dog home and care for it until the patient is discharged. Rose continues to help the patient’s by showering the homeless and at times, feeding patients out of her own money. She listens when other staff members need to talk, and I have never seen her not jump in to help a team member. Again, it is with great pleasure to submit this nomination for Rose to be awarded the ACE employee of the month.
2. Brecca Skinner—RUNNER-UP!
IFCH Nutritional Services Dept. Nutr. Compliance Coordinator
I would like to nominate Brecca Skinner for February’s ACE Award. Brecca recently took on the duties of being the Nutrition Compliance Coordinator. She is doing an excellent job with her duties, but she is also taking on a lot of duties that are not hers to help members of the team.
This past Monday night was busy for our cooks, and they did not find time to put away the freezer items from today’s shipment. When Brecca heard, although she normally has a comfortable office job, she went in and threw all the freezer stock herself so our cooks wouldn’t have to stay late after our staff meeting to put it all away.
A couple more examples are:
When our morning café cashier missed her alarm and was coming in late. Brecca had everything ready to go when our cashier got here, and we were opened on time.
Another example is when one of our hospital departments did not meet the deadline to have valentine treats picked up on Breccca’s regular shopping day, she got up early and ran to the store for them on her way into work so they could proceed with their department holiday plans. Brecca is a gem, and we’re sure lucky to have her on our Idaho Falls Community Hospital team.
3. Jessica Stacey-SHOUTOUT!
IFCH Cath IR Dept. RN
I would like to nominate Brecca Skinner for February’s ACE Award. Brecca recently took on the duties of being the Nutrition Compliance Coordinator. She is doing an excellent job with her duties, but she is also taking on a lot of duties that are not hers to help members of the team.

4. Tyrel Jones-SHOUTOUT!
IFCH ED RN
I would like to nominate Tyrel Jones RN. Ty received a post-arrest patient from EMS close to his end-of-shift. The patient was complex and required a good deal of effort to stabilize. Ty stayed past the end of his shift 2+ hours to facilitate the patient's admission to the ICU, resulting in excellent continuity of care. Ty also declined leaving closer to his off time due to the burden that managing his patient would have placed on the understaffed and at capacity ER. Ty did not once voice a complaint about leaving late, even though he was returning to work the next day to cover an opening due to a sick call.
Ty frequently supports his patients and the ER in this manner. Additionally, Ty provides exemplary patient care on a consistent and on-going basis and imparts these habits to his orientees.
5. Kimery Capell-SHOUTOUT!
IFCH ED RN
I would like to nominate Kimery Capell RN for the Ace Award. I have received patients from Kimery often. I love to receive her patients. All vitals, procedures and charting are complete and accurate. When Kim oversees a psychiatric patient, she works tirelessly throughout the night shift to advocate for that patient to assure they receive proper placement in a facility.
Most recently I came in to cover admitted patients who were being held in the ER. Kim had ordered all their morning medications and had them available to me for first medication pass, this dramatically lessened my workload and time investment. She had also filled out a report sheet (a nurse brain) that was so helpful in assuming care of the patients. Kim is a stellar nurse, with great work ethic. She is a team player and always advocates for her patients. I feel she is deserving of the ACE award.
6. Elizabeth Douglas-SHOUTOUT!
IFCH Surgical Dept. RN (4 Nominations)
I'd like to nominate Liz Douglas the ORRN in IFCH Surgical Services. She always has the best smile on her face even though she's exhausted. She is always willing to help and answer my questions as a new employee. She is very knowledgeable and so kind; she is a great patient advocate. She is the best! HER SMILE is contagious!!!
I would like to nominate Liz Douglas, RN from the IFCH OR for the ACE award this month. Liz is a ray of sunshine at work and is always willing to step in wherever she can to help fellow employees or patients. She goes out of her way to help others; on multiple occasions Liz has been willing to inconvenience herself to help others, whether it be staying late, flip-flopping between OR and PACU, or simply picking up extra shifts. She maintains a positive attitude even when overwhelmed and/or exhausted, and the day is always made better when Liz is here.
Liz Douglas from IFCH O.R. Surgery Department- I am nominating Liz Because even though she is an O.R. circulating nurse, she also is willing to help in Pre-Op and PACU. She is always so cheerful, and always sees the good in any situation. There was one week where she had a couple of back-to-back G.I. bleeds and ended up with some real smelly code browns, but she just kept a big smile on her face while cleaning up her patients and made sure her patients were comfortable. I try to be more like Liz and keep a positive attitude when the situation gets tough to handle.
Hello! I would like to nominate Liz Douglas from Surgery down here. She works so insanely hard and is one of the easiest people to work with. It's rare to hear literally anything but positivity from her and she is always willing to lend a hand to whoever needs it. She's had to take a lot of hard cases lately and she's always a go-getter. She totally deserves the recognition and the award! She's so awesome!
