Congratulations! IFCH is Officially a Level III Trauma Center

Idaho Falls Community Hospital is officially a Level III Trauma Center. We are incredibly proud of all of your hard work. We never would have been able to achieve this certification from the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare without the tremendous efforts from this team. Congratulations!

Idaho Falls Community Hospital opened a little more than two years ago. It is remarkable we have been able to earn our Level III trauma certification in such a short amount of time and a testament to this team’s commitment to provide our community with exceptional emergency care.

Being a Level III Trauma Center means our team has proven our ability to provide our community with prompt, lifesaving care. The designation also means our hospital is able to treat more critical patients and, as a result, we will likely see more patients come to us from EMS.

Our new trauma designation requires us to always have emergency physicians at the hospital to care for the community. And surgeons and anesthesiologists must always be available to respond to emergencies.

We would like to give a special thanks to Dr. O’Byrne and the TSE team at Idaho Falls Community Falls for all of their work over the last year on achieving our new trauma certification. During the site visit, the team received many compliments for their efforts from the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare.

We are currently working on our Level II Stroke and Level I STEMI Center designations. We anticipate the certification process for those two designations will take approximately another year.

Thank You, Team!

We went through a rather large computer issue recently that devastated our support areas for the hospital. We had intermittent issues with the intranet, PACS, Lab and the phones. This was potentially devastating to our delivery of care to the patients, but we had some amazing people step up and help make sure that didn’t happen. We want to thank you all for maintaining professionalism and for all the extra work you did. Your frustrations and concerns took a back seat to your ethics and desire to do a great job. We thank you.

I just wanted to send a huge kudos to people that were here on Friday night. In a potentially crippling event, a whole crew pulled together and worked their behinds off. In the lab, Lindsay Bischoff provided her personal cell phone number and fielded ALL the calls to lab. And every time I spoke with her on the phone, she had the same smile in her voice that she always does. Karen Lamonica, Crystal Packer, and Chelsea Henrie (the ones I personally saw, I'm sure there were more behind the scenes) ran all over the hospital and back again to deliver samples and then the paper copy of the results.

From my own unit, everyone that was here that night did a phenomenal job. IMC got hit hard at the beginning of the night shift. All my nurses and CNAs deserve a shout out. Zachary Lake, Matthew Mikkelson, Derrek Zaugg, Laxmi Bhattarai, Hadley Rumsey, Serena Nelson, Zachary Wintermyer, Teresa Bento, and Rebecca Ricks. I am very proud of how everyone pulled together.

House supervisor Brian Kalita helped all over the hospital to make sure things ran as smooth as possible. He was the glue that helped hold the whole night together.

I just wanted to share a point of view from the front lines.

If you’ve been to the Cornerstone Café recently you’ve probably noticed that our baking
team has been showing off their talents and skills and delighting us all with a variety of
tasty treats. Come see what Melissa, Lis and Merelou has baked up for us… new items

Upcoming Changes in Café Pricing

It has been two years now since the COVID-19 invasion on our community and facility. We have maintained our pre-COVID prices, thinking that the wild price increases and difficult product availability would return to normal at some point—but two years in, we are still finding it difficult to locate product, and as you’ve noticed in the grocery stores, prices have not come back down, and in fact, continue to rise. MANY of the items on our current café menu are being sold at prices that do not even cover the cost of purchasing the food (that’s right, we’ve actually been paying you to come eat our food). Unfortunately this means that we will be needing to increase prices. Our grill menu boards and pricing will be updated on Friday, April 8th. Although prices are changing, please know that we are committed to offering great food at a great price. The employee discount of 20% will also still be honored on all cafe-prepared items. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we undergo these needed changes.

A.C.E. Award Nominations

1. Johanna Salazar—WINNER!

IFCH Nutritional Services Cook

I would like to nominate Johanna Salazar for the ACE Award for going above & beyond for my 4-year-old granddaughter who had her tonsils removed. After she was discharged, she wanted a chocolate milkshake. She was initially told that milkshakes were only for in-patients. My granddaughter shed a big crocodile tear and said ok. Johanna was watching this exchange and told my daughter to wait, that she would see what she could do. Johanna came back with a chocolate shake for each of them after getting it approved. I know this seems like a small thing - but it was HUGE to that little, scared, 4-year-old girl❤️❤️. Hats off to Johanna for taking the extra time!! It meant everything to us.

2. Jason Killian—RUNNER-UP!

IFCH ICU RN

4/6/2022 - I would like to nominate Jason Killian in the ICU for the ACE Award. It does not matter the day, the assignment, or the circumstances, Jason comes in every shift with a smile on his face, a song playing on his phone, and gets everyone excited and happy about the day. He makes everyone around him happier that they are here just by being here. His patient care is second to none, and his interactions with patient family members should be the bar that we all strive to meet.

4/21/2022 - So an example is like today. On the unit we had a patient (his patient) that was being very rude, verbally abusive, threatening, and causing all kinds of problems before leaving AMA. Even after being treated so poorly by the patient, with everyone including managers not being in a good mood, Jason came through with a song playing on his phone and was singing & uplifting his coworkers and continued being supportive even though we (staff & managers etc.) should have been doing that for him.

3. Pollyanne Walker—Shout Out!

IFCH Surgery Dept. RN

I am writing to nominate my coworker Pollyanne Walker for the Ace Award. Pollyanne is an RN who truly goes above & beyond for not only her patients but her coworkers as well. She is always someone who asks how someone in our department is doing and will sit there to listen and offer any advice she has. Pollyanne is always the first to help out with a potluck or offering to bring a treat for someone's birthday. I feel like she is the mama bear of the department and just truly shows she cares with her actions & words. She is such a giving person. She is the type of person who would give you the shirt off her back out of the kindness of her heart. Besides being kind, she is also such a hard worker. She recently had surgery on her foot and returned to work not even a week later (I think it was like 5 days). She is constantly working early shifts or taking call and even with all the extra work I never hear her complain. She is a very compassionate nurse who truly cares for her patients as well. Before I met my husband, she was his nurse at EIRMC, and she made a lasting impression on him as a patient because of how kind and compassionate she is. I truly can't say enough good things about Pollyanne! I can't think of someone who deserves this award/recognition more than her.

4. Emily Mangus & Clea Conners—Shout Out!

IFCH House

I would like to recognize Emily and Clea for their conduct in addressing a violent patient in PACU. Both were unfortunately assaulted, Emily more so, by this patient who was completely alert and oriented. However, their quick actions prevented the patient from assaulting the pregnant PACU RN and reduced injuries to a PACU Student RN who were both involved in this incident. Additionally, upon my arrival both Emily and Clea appeared calm and were actively directing not only the patient, but the Student and other PACU staff in effective tactics to manage this patient's violent behavior. Their deliberate and collected approach assisted in deescalating the patient as much as possible. I have no doubt that injuries to staff would have been far worse if not for Emily and Clea's quick and calm actions.
